In 1901, the 2nd Orthographic Conference completed the standardization of the written language of the German language. The Duden Handbook was declared its standard definition.

Official revisions of some of the rules from 1901 were not issued until the controversy of the German orthography reform of 1996 was made the official standards by the German-speaking countries.
