The origin of the Amharic language is one million years old. It is traced to the 1st millennium BC. Historians ruled out the fact that rulers used the Amharic language in communication. The South-west Arabia King Solomon and Queen of Sheba’s descendants travelled through the Red Sea into Eritrea. Menelik 1 the son of the Queen, was the first Ethiopian emperor.
The immigrants mixed with the Cushitic people gave birth to a new language Geez. Geez was the official language of the Axum Empire from 1st to 6th Century AD. Until Axum was overthrown by Amhara. Amhara remained powerful from the 10th to 12th Century AD.
In the 13th Century Amhara was used in the Courts and dominants of people in Ethiopia. Amharic became an official language of Ethiopia in the 14th Century. Amharic documents written in the 14th Century proved that this language was used widely. It was in the 17th Century that the Amharic language became lingua franca.
In 1991, the Ethiopian government welcomed people and ethnic groups to develop their language. They use this language to teach their primary students. Today primary schools in Ethiopia use Amharic and other ethnic languages to teach their students. While secondary schools use English as their medium of instruction.
