TWI statistics

Twi is a language which is spoken in the southern part of Ghana. Around 8 million people in Ghana speak Twi. Around 58% of people speak Twi and 30% around the world speak in Ivory Coast. Other countries like Jamaica and Suriname speak Twi. This language is popular in those villages that are managed by their chiefs.

There are many universities which offer Twi courses language as there is a fear it will be diminished in a few years. It is a mixture of English and Twi language.

The Twi language comes under the division of the Niger combo group of African languages. Twi is a tonal language which involves high, mid, and low tones. The meaning of each word changes when you change the tone of the syllables. There are two dialects of Twi Asante and Akwapim. The dialect was first used for translating the bible and was Akwapim. We are familiar with it. The Twi language can be written on a common script that was created by the Bureau of Ghana Languages.

Swahili History

Twi is spoken in central and south-eastern parts of Ghana. In the 13th century when Akans started to occupy the forest and coastal area for their use. The Akans spoke their ideas through stories and proverbs. They use their language to pass the culture to the next generation.

In 1900 Ghana was colonized by the British. The Akans also learnt to speak English. There was no written Twi till 1978 when the Akan orthography established orthography for the Akans. With this, they gathered 20,000 new words.

Twi was spread in South America and the Caribbean Islands through the slave trade. Escaped slaves and other descendants use Twi as their language till today.

Till today Jamaica is speaking Twi as an official language. One of the most well-known literature species known as Anansi spider stories is popular in Jamaica and Suriname.
