Somali Dialect

Somali dialect is divided into three parts- Northern, Banadir, and Maay. Northern Somali forms the basis of Central Somali. Banadir is spoken on the Banadir coast from Cadel to the South of Marka. Coastal Somali has additional phonemes, which do not exist in Standard Somali.

Somali Grammer

Somali is an agglutinative language. It uses case, gender, and markers. They have numbers. Somali uses many pronouns which makes it different from the Indo-European language. They use particles to signify the focus of a sentence. There is extensive use of tone in the Somali language. The case is different and there is gender polarity.

Official status for Somali

Constitutionally, Arabic and Somali two both are the official languages of Somalia. Since 1973, they are the official language of Somalia. Supreme Revolutionary Council declared the Somali Democratic Republic the main language of education and administration.

In 1972, the SRC adopted an official Orthography, as an official alphabet, of various scripts used in that period. Concurrently the Italian newspaper “The October Star” was nationalised. It came in the publishing in Somali. The State-run radio Mogadishu has also been broadcast in Somalia since 1952.

Somali has been recognized as the official language of Ethiopia. Although it is not the official language of Djibouti. However, many Radio and television channels use Somali as their language. Kenya broadcasts the program Iftin FM in the Somali language.

The Regional Somali Academy was held responsible for the preservation of the Somali language. The headquarters is in Djibouti.
